Designing a cosy bathroom – tips & ideas

There are different ways to make your bathroom feel cosy. We explain the key principles:

Clever room layout

If you are lucky enough to have a freestanding bath, you can make this the centrepiece of your bathroom. However, the cosy style works well in simpler bathrooms too. Screens and curtains can be used to separate different areas of the bathroom and also allow easy integration later.

Use warm colours in your bathroom design

Warm colours are ideal for a cosy bathroom. However, they don't necessarily need to be dark. Orange, yellow and light red shades are good choices for your bathroom and will add beautiful accents. Soft natural hues such as brown or beige can be used as base colours. Sage or lavender are other natural colours that work well in a cosy bathroom.

Inspiration: bathroom furniture

Some bathroom furniture has a practical function. The vanity unit, for example, provides organised storage for all kinds of items. And organisation is important in a cosy bathroom. Bathroom furniture in natural materials will always be a safe choice.

Wooden accents

Wood is one of the most popular materials in a cosy bathroom. The colour, of course, plays a role too. Choose warm and preferably dark woods that add accents. There are lots of options: for example, wood-look furniture or a wood surface on part of the floor to visually separate different areas.

How to make a small bathroom feel cosy

Small bathrooms can easily be transformed into cosy retreats. Large tiles will make a small, cosy bathroom look slightly larger. They also create a more restful effect as there are fewer joints. A consistent colour scheme and lots of natural materials are ideal for a cosier feel.

Challenge: making a large bathroom feel cosy

It can be difficult to create a cosy atmosphere in large bathrooms. One solution is clever separation of different areas, as already explained for room dividers.

Use different colours in individual areas to visually break up the space. Indirect lighting arrangements work well too. These can be controlled individually to light up only the part of the bathroom you are using.

Create a relaxed atmosphere with warm light

The right lighting in the bathroom is essential to create a perfect feel-good atmosphere. Daylight is, of course, the best choice, but not every bathroom has a window. This is where warm lighting comes in. Indirect light sources will add atmospheric accents.
